14 Division CPLC Scholarship Program Needs Community Partners

Scholarship opportunity from the Community Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) of 14 Division Toronto Police Service (TPS) – community partners needed to support this program

This 14 Division CPLC Scholarship Program will award a scholarship to a deserving young person who lives or goes to school within the boundaries of the Toronto Police Services 14 Division and who is engaged in making this community a safer place to be.  The 14 Division CPLC is hoping to raise $5000 this year to provide scholarships for two students.  The successful student must demonstrate financial need and must articulate a positive vision for community safety initiatives.   Matching Scholarships will be offered through Ryerson, the University of Toronto, York University, OCAD University, Humber College, George Brown College and Seneca College, to support the students second year of studies at these institutions.

Community partners are being sought to support this scholarship program.  This Scholarship benefits us all by recognizing and rewarding youth who make our communities safer through active volunteerism, advocacy and leadership.  Please consider supporting this Scholarship initiative.  Financial donations of any amount will be accepted (tax receipts will be issued).

Contact the LVBIA lynn@lvbia.com for further information on the scholarship and for details on how to make payment.

Goodbye Canada Bread

We say goodbye to Canada Bread.

Canada Bread ceased operations in Liberty Village on February 3, 2012.  The smell of their fresh bread is a memory now, along with the dance of the Canada Bread trucks at the various Liberty Street intersections.  There will be no more of their community bar-b-q’s in support of the United Way, and no more bakery sales where all of their bread products were priced at $1.  There will be no more school groups passing through Liberty Village after a tour of the bread production plant.  The site of workers clad in white overalls and hair nets will not be seen again.  The south end of Liberty Village seems quieter now.  We already miss you Canada Bread!

Canada Bread was an important part of the history of Liberty Village.

Dufferin Street Reconstruction

Dufferin St. reconstruction begins March 2012.

Toronto Transportation is reconstructing Dufferin Street from the Gates of Exhibition Place (Springhurst Avenue) to Queen St West.  Construction begins in March and completes mid August, in time for the start of the annual CNE.  The road, sidewalks, TTC streetcar tracks and water mains will be replaced to improve the functionality, safety, and the overall visual appeal of Dufferin Street (which is always on Toronto’s worst roads list). New trees will be planted and the tree beds of the existing mature trees will be improved.

The LVBIA is taking opportunity, as part of this construction project, to cost share with the City on installing a few “gateway” improvements that will make this part of Liberty Village more welcoming.

There will be times when traffic will be affected by the construction, including a short time when Dufferin Street will be in one direction only.  We will keep you advised of any impacts to traffic and TTC.
